The career in the Defence service  is the matter of pride, honour, dignity. There are many options for the aspirants of our country to join the service of Indian Defence.  

The students with 10th, 12th or Graduation can enter into the defence service. 

The main service in Indian defence is Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air force. 

The selected Aspirants can serve the nation by joining the defence service either as permanent commission or as short service commission.

The permanent commission is the service where the selected candidate can serve the country till retirement at the age of 60. 

Short service commission provides the opportunity to serve for a limited period of 10-15 years.

Career In Indian Army:

Indian Army

Desiring aspirants can make their career in defence after 12th   through the NDA exam. They can serve the country by joining the armed force. However, the career in defence after graduation  is  through the CDSE. Other ways through which Indian Army can be joined is through the TES (Technical Entry Scheme), SSC technical, Technical Graduate Course (TGC), University Entry Scheme (UES) and special entry through NCC .

Career In Indian Air Force:

The most promising career in defence service is Indian Air force. The candidate can serve the nation by joining Indian Air Force under different levels. Indian Air force provides many opportunities  to serve for the country.

Career in defence after 12th

 If you are thinking ,What should i do after 12th for defence? Then the answer is that you can make your career in defence by undergoing the NDA exams. You can also Join the defence courses to directly join the defence service without examination.

Career in defence after Engineering

Engineering graduates aspirants can join the defence at officer level. The best part is, they need not to go through any written examination. They can join defence  through UES (University Entry Scheme)  or TGS (Technical Graduate Scheme). The eligible candidates have to appear before the service selection boards. 

Entrance exams for Defence

The UPSC ( Union Public Service commission) conducted the national level exam for the candidates looking to serve as a career in defence services. The conduction of examination and the selection process solely depends on the guidelines issued by UPSC.

Combined Defence Service Examination:

The  combined defence service examination (CDS ) is conducted by UPSC twice a year. 

The UPSC conducts exams for both permanent commission and Short service commission.

For permanent commission the candidate has to write three papers English, General knowledge and Mathematics. However for short service commission students have to face only two papers of English and General knowledge. 

CDS examination is for enrolling the desirable candidates into Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval academy and Indian Air Force Academy for proper training.

 NDA examination (National Defence Academy)

NDA examination is the gateway for the aspirants looking for career in defence after 12th class or equivalent examination. The selected candidates can serve the country by joining Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force.

The NDA exam is conducted by the UPSC twice a year as NDA I and NDA II. Interested eligible unmarried candidates can face the exam in either of the phases (NDA I or  NDA II), followed by the personality test or Interview conducted by Service Selection Board (SSB).

Aspirants can join the Indian Air Force through some other gateway like:

  1. NCC SE: (National Cadet Corps Special entry): www.careerairforce.nic.in

The eligible male candidate with Physics and mathematics as subjects in their graduation can apply for Flying Branch of Indian Air force service. The age limit is 20-26 years.  The short listed candidates can join as Permanent commission. 

  1. AFCAT: ( Air force common Admission Test)

The eligible candidates can apply for the examinations for career in Flying branch and For Ground Duty (Technical/ Non technical) branches.

  1. UES entry (University Entry Scheme)
  2.  Graduate Direct Entries
  3. 10+2( B.tech) Cadet entry

Training Academies

After clearing the entrance exam and interview round, the candidates undergo training, which is the transition phase of a common person into a soldier. The training process train the body and mind to face all challenges. 

1. Indian Military Academy,  Dehradun.

This academy was established in 1932. This is officers training academy for the Indian Army for permanent commission service.

2. Officers Training Academy, Chennai.

This academy was established in 1963 to train officers for short service commission for the Indian Army.

3. The Indian Naval Academy, Kerala.

This academy was established in 1969 to train the candidates for Indian Navy and Indian Coast guard.

4. The Indian Air force Academy, Hyderabad.

Established in 1969 to train officers for the Indian Air Force. 

01. What is the age limit for defence?

The age limit for the career in defence varies and depends on the type entry, engagement  and the educational qualification eligibility. 
However the upper age limit is 45 as a Territorial army.
NDA exam: 16.5 – 19 years
CDS exam: 19-24 years
Direct entry for Engineering graduates: 20-27 years.

02. What is the qualification for defence?

The eligible and Aspirants youth can join the career in defence after 12th, after graduation and Engineering graduation also.
The level of the entry depends on the educational qualification and the exams the candidate is facing.
There are also Defence courses offered by many universities and Institutions.


03. Which is the highest post in defence?

Indian Army

Indian Navy
The highest rank in Indian Army is Field Marshal, a Five star general Officer.
The highest rank in Indian Air Force is Marshal of the Indian Air Force.
The highest rank in Indian Naval service is Admiral of the Fleet.
